    About the Book

    Edit

The motivation for this book came from my observations of repeating patterns contained in images that I found in negatives from the 1970s and my current digital-based portfolios. An odd thought and feeling emerged - I don't remember taking the individual frames of any photograph. They all seem in the "present" and not the past. There is no "illusion" of Time. It reminds me of Einstein's statement on the death of his friend - "Now Besso has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion."

Time is an illusion invented by the Observer. In my case, it's the Photographer as Observer - observing from different points in the universe and splicing these points side by side to create "invariance" sans any notion of Time. The images flow into one another - enter a shadow and exit into the sunlight in the future. They are transported to another observation point in the continuum of space-time. The images are invariant regardless of mental state, consciousness, or Time. The constant is Self.

This notion of Time keeps going forward, like gravity, pulling us through emotional experiences and physical transformations. All that remains are memories of what has been, unable to change anything, unable to jump forward, and see the next steps.

The Photographic Subjects in the1970's look to the future of Subjects in 2019 and visa Versa with the Photographer as the Observer in the present. A strange feeling of invariance and endless repetition enters the mind where Time has no direction. Regardless of how one-directional experiencing Time feels to us, Time works the same way forward and backward in these Photographs. The Photographer creates the illusion of Time.

The Photographs are memories (past and future), such that the emergence of the uni-directional arrow of Time is related to the ability of o
