About the Book
Charting the history of a doctors' surgery in the English County Town of Taunton, French Weir Health Centre starts in the Victorian era and brings the story right through the COVID pandemic. We observe how the practice evolved through private medical practice and club healthcare, through to the National Insurance Act of healthcare and the emergence of the National Health Service. Initially in the homes of Dr Wadham Winckworth, the practice survived the trials of two world wars to become a multi-partner doctors' surgery. Later in the 1970s the practice moved to its present dedicated health centre with a multidisciplinary team. The history of French Weir Health Centre is a local history, a medical history and a social history.
