The concept of this project was conceived in a place near the mouth of the river Oreto in Palermo, Sicily. The Oreto is one of three rivers found in the city, but is the only remaining open-air river. The others have now sunk beneath the surface of the city, forming part of the sewage system. Sadly, the Oreto River is starting to resemble the sewers, as people illegally dump their unwanted possessions; depriving the river of its true identity and essence as a powerful source of nature.

Along the river a horse named Ciccio has become a witness to the rivers troubles. The depressing reality of the Oreto littered with human detritus but observed by a symbol of nature, faithfully overlooking the death of another part of nature, fuelled interest in seeking similar metaphors to depict visions of the way we live today.

To convey these conflicting realities of contemporary life, combinations of images have been selected as a method to present aspects of our daily lives, subverted by often harsh, sad and contradictory truths. By providing such comparisons the viewer is able to profoundly reflect on the faces, objects and places presented and make their own associations between the meanings of the two images.
