    About the Book

    Edit

Chantal Bethel’s art is as complex and multilayered as the artist herself. Born in Haiti, she was educated in Belgium, and has made The Bahamas her home for most of her adult life. Emotion and reconnecting with her heritage is a strong part of her practice. Her work reflects her story of discovery, healing, resilience, love, hope, and transformation.

Bethel's practice encompasses mixed media paintings, assemblage, and installation. She developed her signature style with the use of "crackle" acrylic medium—a metaphor for seeing the truth beyond the surface.

Her Poto Mitan (2012) installation, acquired by the Waterloo Center for the Arts in Iowa in 2014, has recently traveled to Chicago for an exhibition curated by the Waterloo Centre for the Arts at the Haitian American Museum of Chicago (HAMOC). Bethel’s work was featured at The Bahamas pavilion of art and culture during World Expo in Dubai in 2022.

    Chantal Bethel
    Grand Bahama Island, The Bahamas

Chantal Bethel is an accomplished artist who has received international recognition for her work. A noted painter, her fluid style complements her signature palette of vibrant, warm and rich colors. She extended her artistic vision to sculpture in 2006, transforming the crown shaft of the palm tree into sculptural medium. Her work has been selected for many of the National biennial juried exhibitions at The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, and is also found in many private collections. She received awards of excellence in the realm of Fine Art in Washington D.C., and The Bahamas. In 2001 she was honored by Miami Children's Hospital for her support of children's issues through art. She has exhibited extensively in The Bahamas and the United States since 1994. Her latest exhibit will be held at the D'Aguilar Art Foundation in Nassau, Bahamas beginning January 12, 2012. She works on Grand Bahama island with her husband and children. www.chantalbethel.com
