    About the Book

    Edit

Slice is based on the 1955 20th Anniversary Annual of US Camera edited by Edward Steichen. Cropped details of the photographs were selected and juxtaposed by the artist in original sequence along with excerpts of captions and texts as a means of reviewing and representing the state of photography in that decade. The accompanying essay by the artist discusses the conceptual and theoretical issues of the project. This work was exhibited in 2002 at the Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography in Toronto. This publication makes the project once more accessible in an elegant book format.

    Peter Sramek
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Peter Sramek is a Canadian fine art photographer/book artist. He studied at MIT under Minor White and taught photography, photobooks and handbinding at OCADU from 1976 to 2021. His diverse projects explore our connections to history and place as well as the natural world. Sequencing images brought him to the book form and making editions by hand. Dedication to community practice led to involvement in forming Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography in Toronto, the International Art Collaborations Network (INTACnet.org) and Shibagau Creek Forest Farmstead in Tamworth, ON (scff.ca). He is included in collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, the National Library of Canada, MOMA (NYC), the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Toronto Archives, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and York University Library. Sramek's trade books are with Intellect Books (UK) or made available under his imprint, Photo°Sequence Books, while his handmade books are represented by Robert Wright Books.
