    About the Book

    Edit

Camp Highlands for Boy published a camp yearly from 1914-1931. This book aims to bring one of the camp's many historic treasures - 'The 1914 Dinglebat' - to the world. 'The Dinglebat' was 'named by boys, written by boys, and printed by boys.' To this day, dinglebat is the camp term for the mosquito nets that hang over camper bunks. The early yearbooks are full of amusing if not cryptic write ups on: the Fourth of July and Camp Birthday; Best Camper votes; canoe trips; camp music and clubs, and much more. It includes a full register of campers and counselors, including addresses. Camp Highlands was created for the boys of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in 1904. Even by the 11th summer, most campers lived within walking distance of the University. The yearbook is full of amusing nicknames and insider terms. You'll need to put on a 1914 lens to interpret this book! The Smithsonian has asked for the camp's historic Dinglebat collection. For the first time, we provide access to the one of a kind, All-American treasure to one and all!

My books are mostly about Camp Highlands for Boys - the oldest American summer camp west of the Allegheny mountains. Nestled along the shores of a hilly peninsula - jutting out into the sandy bottomed, spring fed Plum Lake - Highlands is the stuff of Northern Wisconsin dreams. Camp's University of Chicago origin story - with its many colorful and beautiful personalities - intrigues me to no end! There was - and is - so much to work with! In 2007, I found myself scanning camp's gorgeous old photographs, many of them medium format glass lantern slides! The archival process inspired me to create this collection of coffee table books. I hope you love them!
