About the Book
On Friday of orientation week all new Warren Wilson College students and their peer group leaders along with other Warren Wilson volunteers spent a service day at Carrier Park at the edge of the French Broad River in Asheville, NC. At 8 a.m. participants gathered in Kittredge parking lot and were taken on buses to Carrier Park. As the day got hotter and hotter and hotter peer groups cut brush, weeded, spread ground cover, created paths, painted the bicycle raceway, sanded and stained the playground, built wooden fences, put together picnic tables as well as doing a great deal more. During the day everyone drank endless bottles of water and at noon ate a picnic lunch. At 4 p.m. everyone gathered for watermelon and thank you's from the Carolyn Wallace and the Service Learning staff as well as representatives of Asheville Parks and Recreation. And then, exhausted, everyone boarded a bus and was driven back to Warren Wilson College.

Asheville, North Carolina
I grew up in India where my parents were Presbyterian agricultural missionaries and have taught at Warren Wilson College most of my life. My photographs are of north India and Sri Lanka where I have traveled many times; of Germany, which is my wife, Kathe's, home; and of the Swannanoa Valley and Asheville, North Carolina and of students and staff at Warren Wilson College, in Swannanoa just outside Asheville. Lately I have also been photographing weddings at Hidden River Events.
