For almost four decades Spahr has been inspired by stone lithography. The limestone block was once a mass of Jurassic mud at the bottom of a tropical lagoon in Europe. Its grained surface is exquisitely sensitive and absorbs the artist’s image drawn in grease pencils. This book reproduces traditional lithographs printed from stone, but also more radical interpretations of the medium: facsimiles of the stone cast in wax and large-scale print paintings that use the scarring levigator as an engraving tool. The book shows in full the following cycles of work: Nightwork, Spiracle, Pitch, Lying Awake, Soot and Soul.
Following the format of her earlier books, OPEN STUDIO, and FULGURITE (a blurb book,) Spahr has added a generous selection of excerpts from the notebooks. They capture the moments of steep and deep the artist experiences behind the closed doors of the studio.
The few artists still inspired with stone lithography may live on a shrinking island in our digital world, but it is an enchanting island where time has time to solidify.
Lying Awake is also available as an eBook.

    Herlinde SPAHR
    Orinda, CA

Herlinde Spahr was born in Antwerp, Belgium and came to California in 1977 as a graduate student in Comparative Literature at UC Berkeley. Parallel with her studies, she pursued her interests in the visual arts, especially stone lithography. At the completion of her studies, she had become a master printer and exhibiting artist which led her to to forgo an academic career and set up her studio, Lithium Press. With the lithographic stones becoming too heavy to handle, Spahr began executing her images on Formica, durable panels with a grain and hardness similar to limestone, thereby fusing printmaking and painting techniques. Spahr's work is included in 60 Years of American Prints, 1947-2007 and in The Best of Printmaking. An International Collection, 1997. The Monterey Museum of Art featured her large format work in a one person exhibition in 2021, entitled The Precipice Within.
