    About the Book

    Edit

Santiago Calatrava is an internationally recognized and award-winning Spanish architect, sculptor and structural engineer.

His works include such avant-garde constructions as the Turning Torso (Malmö, Sweden), the Olympic Sports Complex (Athens, Greece), the Chords Bridge (Jerusalem, Israel), the Milwaukee Arts Museum (Wisconsin, USA), or the Estaçao do Oriente (Lisbon, Portugal). He is currently designing the future World Trade Center Transportation Hub at Ground Zero in New York City.

His most ambitious proyect is, perhaps, the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (CAC) in Valencia, Spain. Built on the old bed of the Turia river, it is a unique complex devoted to scientific and cultural dissemination which is made up of five main elements: the Hemisfèric (IMAX cinema and digital projections), the Umbracle (a landscaped vantage point and car park), the Museo de Ciencias Príncipe Felipe (interactive science center), the Oceanogràfic (the largest aquarium in Europe) and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (the opera house) A sixth element, the Ágora (a multifunctional space) is under construction alongside the Assut de l'Or Bridge.

A visit to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is a memorable experience for anyone sensitive to design and an invitation to let imagination run free.
