    About the Book

    Edit

David Halpern was invited to Bandelier National Park in 2014 to help create a new artist-in-residence program based on the ones in which he'd served eleven times before. What began as a year-long project ultimately lasted for two years, during which time he was privileged to serve as Bandelier's first participant in the newly developed position. He was also given access to the Valles Caldera National Preserve which shares it's eastern boundary with Bandelier and has itself recently become a part of the National Park Service. Part of the agreement each artist-in-residence makes with the park is to donate to the park a portion of the work created during the residency and to allow that to be used by the park and the National Park Service for educational and interpretive purposes. In the past, Halpern had donated photographs to the parks' collections, but this time—because the park currently does not have space to exhibit donated two-dimensional art—he decided to create a book of images he created and to present that to the park's archive. The volume contains more than 200 of the thousands of photographs he made and 224 13" x 11" pages which also contain information taken primarily from his journals. Because of its purpose, the text is written primarily for the administration and staff of Bandelier National Monument, but the content will be of interest to anyone who has an interest in national parks and Bandelier in particular. This was Halpern's twelfth opportunity to serve as a National Park Artist-in-Residence, and as far as we know, no other individual has served as many times in that capacity. His insights are not only those of an accomplished photographer, but reflect a devotion to the concept, traditions and objectives of the National Park System; certainly one of the most significant contributions our country has made to generations—past present and future—and to the world.
