    About the Book

    Edit

This book is intended for systems professionals who need to understand, monitor and control the factors that affect AIX performance on their IBM Power servers. It also include bonus' chapters on the recent innovations of AIX 6.1, Linux on Power (LoP) performance and a special chapter on running Oracle on AIX. This is an intermediate book on AIX performance analysis and systems tuning. The material in this book comes both from IBM sources and real-life experiences - which I have had as a Unix professional supporting production systems for 20+ yrs (almost ½ of them on AIX) ; in many capacities, for a broad range of industries. As this book is not an introduction to Unix, prior knowledge of Unix (particularly AIX) is recommended. The book will cover tuning methodology, systems monitoring and performance tuning on all subsystems, including; CPU, RAM and I/O (network and disk). As an introduction, we'll review time-tested tuning and analysis methodology; steps which will assist you throughout the tuning lifecycle. The monitoring sections will discuss tools that will allow you to immediately gain a foothold (taking quick & dirty snapshots on the health of the system) onto your system and also discuss tools which will help you collect historic data for the purpose of analyzing trends and results. All the tools used in this book are either part of the standard IBM AIX systems build or open source products written by folks that work for IBM (I.E. nmon), and used widely in the field of battle.
