    About the Book

    Edit

Inspired by frequent trips to Africa, wildlife artist, Nancy H. Strailey, has chronicled many of her experiences in An Artist's Odyssey In Africa. Accompanied by her breath-taking colored pencil drawings on hand-made paper, the evocative text details not only her journey from inspiration to finished works of art, but also her transformation from curious traveler to dedicated conservationist and amateur naturalist.

Few artists have had the opportunity to so immerse themselves in their subjects. Tracking rhino on foot with an unarmed guide, traversing Eastern Botswana in the company of a veteran elephant researcher, exploring the ruins of an ancient iro-age civilization are but a few of the encounters which have provided Nancy Strailey with an intimate and unique view of this continent.

In this book, which is organized by habitat, she strives to provide, though her words and the glowing artwork, which accompanies them, a slice of life in each region which she visit. Nancy hopes to convey an understanding of the interconnectedness of it all, and of the sacred nature of her role in the age-old tradition of animal image making.

    Nancy Strailey
    Columbia, SC, USA

Award-winning African wildlife artist, Nancy H. Strailey, uses colored pencils on hand-made papers from around the world to create her unique and evocative drawings. In an on-going exploration of her place in a 300,000 year long continuum of animal and cultural image-makers, Nancy studies animals at sanctuaries and preserves, and, most recently through trips to Africa. The drawing process begins by gathering the materials - papers rich in natural color and interesting texture; pencils, lots of pencils, nearly every color of professional-quality pencil in every brand available, and graphite sketches of the animals and artifacts which Nancy has gleaned from her travels. Each drawing is designed in a series of planning sketches, which are then combined on the exotic paper the artist feels most suitable. Next careful, light layers of colored pencil are patiently overlaid to achieve the visual richness that is the hallmark of Nancy Strailey's coveted drawings.
