    About the Book

    Edit

John F. Kennedy was making stops through out California in behalf of then Governor Edmund G. "Pat" Brown to promote the "conservation plans" the administration was making and doing to make dams, canals, and pumping stations in the northern part of the state to send water south to Los Angeles, etc. He flew in on Friday, September 27, stayed at Lassen National Park for the night, and then Saturday morning helicoptered on to the top of Whiskeytown Dam with many of the state's top political brass. The site was reached by a small two-lane road off Highway 299 - an access nightmare for anyone in a rush, buses, VIP cars only this day. I hired a motorcylist to slip me in/out of the slow traffic and hikers to make my noon deadline for my newspaper the Record-Searchlight. My photo of a girl that walked with 29 of her girlfriends from Hayfork who met JFK was wired nationally by AP photographer Sal Veder using my photo lab that day as well, and appeared on page 1's and inside bay area papers the next day, Sunday editions. I was the only photographer within a few feet with the President as everyone else was shut-out to access where I had surveyed with a Secret Service agent so as to be along the snow fenced but very narrow paved pathway that had a sheer drop-off to the lake's edge below. Thus the basis for this book - exclusive historic photographs now newly available today in 2015 - fifty-two years later.

A Life Member of the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association, after being the Picture Editor at The Sacramento (CA) Union (1968-89), New York Newsday (1989-94), and Contra Costa Times (1994-96) when I retired after 40-years in the newspaper business - starting as a shooter since 1956. I'm retired but still shoot and actively travel today for my own interest. The assorted blurb.com books have turned out to be a way to gather many of my images for nice and simple presentations.
