    About the Book

Wirral is a place one needs to explore. It is full of quaint cottages, stunning architecture, sandy beaches, along with plenty of hidden gems.

It has a rich history. For example, the village of Parkgate was one of England's largest ports in the 1700's. The River Dee has now silted up to create a vast expanse of saltmash. The sea still does comes in, but only at the seasonal high tides. It is now more famous for its ice-cream and a surreal stroll along what was once the quayside. The village of Port Sunlight was built in the late 1800's by William Hesketh Lever (later Lord Leverhulme) to house his workers from the factory. It is home to some wonderful, varied architecture and is an oasis of calm in a busy area of Wirral. New Brighton in the late 1800's was a very popular seaside resort serving both Liverpool and the Lancashire industrial towns. It once had a Tower and a Ballroom that could hold well over 1,000 couples. It is now beginning a major regeneration.

The Liverpool Skyline is one of the most famous in the world. To see it to full advantage (from dry land) one needs to be looking across the Mersey from the Wirral side. Over the past few years many modern building have sprung up and the view has altered dramatically.

In this book we have tried to give a flavour of the place and in doing so, an insight as to why Wirral people are so proud to belong here.

    Wirral

I was born on a farm in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, where my family still live. I moved north to Cheshire about 17 years ago and have spent the last eight years living on Wirral with John. I have had a camera from the age of about eight and have been passionate about photography ever since.
