    About the Book

    Edit

Metalwork is an ancient art form. The art of lost wax and sand casting has virtually not changed throughout the ages. No matter what metals are used and employed, or objects created by either process or material, the work of Philip Brainard is where the past and present meet. Whether cast or forged, custom designed or made to match items that can no longer be found or purchased anywhere, Philip Brainard is a skilled artisan who can design and fabricate, restore and refinish metal and glass with a distinctive and unique flair.

Philip Brainard’s artistry allows him to be creative in ways many cannot envision. His passion for designing both interior and exterior lamps is inspired by the amazing works of Tiffany, the Arts & Craft movement, and the art Nouveau & art Deco movements. As one of the founders of Phoenix Studios Art Glass & Bronze in 1973, Philip’s years of experience can transform typical home décor into sculptural works of art. Utilizing both casting and fabrication techniques in a variety of materials such as bronze, wood, copper, and glass, Philip will design lighting to compliment any home or business from individual customers to decorators and architects, with distinctive taste. Each piece is personally handcrafted by Philip with quality materials and time-honored craftsmanship. As with nature, all works, even ones of similar style, are truly individual and one-of-a-kind. You will always get products made with a sense of pride and artistry in a manner that is quickly becoming a lost art.

    Philip Brainard
    Santa Barbara, CA USA

Philip Brainard’s interest in art began at an early age. Born and raised near the Westmoreland Milk Glass factory, that was owned by his family in Pittsburgh, PA, he went on to pursue formal artistic training at Brooks Art Institute in Santa Barbara, CA in the early 1970's. Soon after graduating, Philip followed in his family’s interest in glass and aesthetics by becoming one of the founders in Phoenix Art Glass & Bronze Studios.  It was there that he began to employ the use of metals and the art of lost wax and sand casting.
