About the Book
A unique and beautiful full color 200 page document filled with the authors historical photographs as well as a first person narrative and paintings and other artwork by the Lt. Mike Ray, who was a pilot in one of the ship's squadrons . Interested personnel will find the book is a visual feast recounting the USS Hornet's Far East cruise of 1965. While the adventure is the personal story of Lt. Mike Ray, it is actually a snap shot for all those thousands of sailors and airman that served in similar circumstances. Even though the experiences were framed by the "Vietnam War" in South-East Asia, the narrative focuses on the air group and the activities of operating aboard ship and is pretty typical for operations during this period of history. The book is not a political statement, but rather unique collection of images and text describing the airplanes and reflecting the activities involved with life aboard a US Navy ship in 1965.

Married to my High School sweetheart for more than 50 years and we have two wonderful daughters and four absolutely terrific grandkids. Life has been sweet. I was strapped to airplane seats most of my life ... and I flew some really great iconic airplanes of military and airline aviation. My last assignment was with a major US airline as Captain on the magnificent Boeing 747-400. Wheew! Great career!
