    About the Book

    Edit

In September 1856, Alexis Gaudin and Frère published a catalogue of glass and paper stereoviews for sale. Included were the works of Claude-Marie Ferrier, Athanase Clouzard and Charles Soulier, Jules Couppier, and Alexandre Bertrand. Bertrand began his career in 1842, preparing silver-plated copper sheets for the use of artisans, eventually preparing plates specifically for daguerreotypists from his workshop on the Ile de la Cite in Paris. He became a daguerreotype artist himself and, in 1851, opened a portrait studio on the rue Dauphine. Then, in 1855, he registered a patent with the French government for tinting glass stereoviews. He not only tinted his own glass stereoviews, but also those of others, most notably stereoviews taken by Jules Couppier. He had learned that adding color enlivened daguerreotype portraits. He would do the same for glass stereoviews. Maintaining a portrait studio throughout these years, he began to make cartes-de-visite in 1860. He sold his business in 1868.
