Christina Nordstrom describes a personal journey in trying to better understand her culture's influence on gender bias and how it influenced her own life. Her work is informed by several pioneering liberation theologians, who ask how they can live as Christians while not recognizing the needs of the poor, and by Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, who provides a teaching method (a "pedagogy") to help the oppressed overcome their oppression, learning how to change from "object" to "subject," while, at the same time "freeing their oppressors."
