    About the Book

    Edit

Dynamic paintings by Wendy Laurenson broadcast their life force from these pages. Most of the paintings are wrapped in stories of why and how they were born, and 'Once Upon a Painting' weaves the words and the images together. As the paintings reveal their stories, they show us an energetic language that is an innate part of our human heritage but that most of us have forgotten.

Somewhere in our human time-line, we shut down our natural sensitivities to the subtle and powerful energetic fields that live in the spaces around us and all living things. These dynamic fields enliven, enfold and inform us, and are part of who we are and what we can become.

We are powerful receiver transmitters with sensitivities that extend way beyond our skin. Over 100 images of paintings selected for the book nudge us to reawaken these sensitivities. It's time to let them tease us with their magic, their memory, and their mystery. It's time for a new story.

    Wendy Laurenson
    Kerikeri, New Zealand

Wendy's paintings are born for these potent times. She started painting in the early 1990s to make sense of some experiences that were beyond the language of words and outside her frame of reference. At the time she was writing feature articles for New Zealand magazines, but after more than a decade of working with words, something else was seeking expression. It was subtle, unseen and soulful. She started to paint. As the paintings evolved they began to include nature's dynamic patterns that live in the spaces around us and all living things. These formative fields have since become an integral part of her paintings. The invisible made visible. In her first book, Wendy weaves her soulful images together with their surprising stories to nudge us toward our ancient future. Wendy lives and works in her coastal studio in the Far North of New Zealand. She has sold most of her paintings, published hundreds of magazine articles, and created all the paintings and stories in this book.
