    About the Book

    Edit

The book is a captivating visual and narrative journey through China, seen through the eyes of a geologist exploring its landscapes, history, and the daily lives of ordinary Chinese people in urban as well as rural settings. Documenting two geological field trips in 1993 and 1994, it presents a non-technical, yet richly detailed account of regions such as Beijing, Hunan, Henan, Guilin in Guangxi, and the vibrant settings of Hong Kong, Macau, and Lantau. With 106 pages and 234 carefully curated photographs by the author, this hardcover edition is both an insightful travelogue and a stunning coffee table book—perfect for those who appreciate the beauty and depth of China’s diverse scenery and culture.

I am an avid world traveler with a deep appreciation for nature and adventure. My journeys—both for work and leisure—have taken me across much of the globe, with extensive exploration in Europe, Africa, the Americas, India, and China. From 1995 until my retirement in June 2008, I managed International Development projects for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), focusing primarily on Latin America and Africa. Prior to that, my career as a geologist led me to mineral exploration projects throughout Canada, including the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. In my free time, I pursue my passions for travel, photography, and genealogy, delving into both new landscapes and my family history. Since retiring, I’ve been able to dedicate time to compiling a significant portion of the thousands of photographs I’ve captured since purchasing my first camera in 1969—turning them into visually rich, illustrated storybooks.
