About the Book
graffiti, though illegal in most US states, is widely considered a form of self expression, and even free speech, by the people making it. in latin, graffiti, roughly, means “to scribble”, but it is so much more than that. the use of liminal spaces such as city walls as a canvas is a tradition as old as language itself. whether it’s a message to a loved one written drunkenly inside a bathroom stall, or ancient drawings of hunting rituals in the lascaux caves, even if society doesn’t recognize their work as an art form, we at least recognize it as a means of communication. this is especially true within the context of politics, economics, government intervention, and policing of cities. recently i have become fascinated by this anonymous means of communicating and resistance to power. who is leaving these messages? what do they mean? are we even supposed to know?
