    About the Book

    Edit

Who Will Count Our Dead and Remember Us? is the first of a three-volume series chronicling the French Foreign Legion's complex history in Indochina, beginning with a brief background history charting some of the most notable campaigns of the Legion in Spain, Algeria, the Crimea, Mexico and the Franco-Prussian War and ensuing Paris Commune in 1871. Subsequently, the focus quickly transitions to the Indochinese peninsula, where the brutal Sino-French War unfolds. During this harsh war, the French sought to secure effective dominance over Tonkin from the established authority of the Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi. Told in vivid detail are the intensive campaigns for Kep, Chu, Hoa Moc, Nui Bop, the prolonged siege of Tuyen Quang, Formosa, and Lang Son. After compelling China to reluctantly abandon its belligerent ambitions for political dominance over Tonkin, the French, especially the Legion, faced the challenging responsibility of effectively securing and policing the Tonkinese protectorate in the face of rising cross-border banditry and aggressive political nationalism. Volume 1 concludes in the year 1913 and includes five maps and 36 illustrations.
