    About the Book

    Edit

Ella Unbound is a partly true, partly fictionalized account of the life of my paternal grandmother. Born in 1873 in Mississippi to an unmarried teenage daughter of a prominent white family and given to their half-black servant to raise as her own, Ella boldly defied the laws of 19th century America when she passed as a black woman, married a black man, and bore their four children. Her true identity would be questioned her entire life. This is a creative re-imagining of her journey.
