    About the Book

    Edit

Feminist Fan is a series by artist American born Australian artist Kate Just. It consists of of hand-knitted homages to queer and feminist artists around the globe including Sarah Lucas, Pussy Riot, Guerrilla Girls, Cindy Sherman, Lynda Benglis, Juliana Huxtable, Mithu Sen, Tracey Moffatt, Yoko Ono, Hannah Wilke and more. The title Feminist Fan emphasizes Just's reverence to these artists and feminism and each carefully stitched picture, featuring over 10,000 stitches and 80 hours work, constitutes a time-intensive act of devotion. Echoing her own use of knitting as an art medium, Just's subjects also highlight the potential of textiles, clothing or adornment in their own artwork to expand representations of gender, sexuality and identity. As a collection, Feminist Fan forms an intimate family portrait of feminism and Just's own influences, in which threads of connection between artists and across time and cultures emerge.

    Kate Just
    Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Kate Just is an American-born Australian artist best known for elaborate knitted sculptures and mixed media installations including figurative and abstract representations of the body and skin, large text-works, tools, armours and knitted banners. Her central interest is the questioning and reframing of historic or iconographic representations of gender from an autobiographical, subjective or embodied perspective. Just's works often image moments of personal transition or struggle, yield an image of intimacy with self or other, or project the idea of hope in the future. Recently, Just has undertaken a range of community-engaged knitting and photographic projects in Austria, the UK and Melbourne addressing diverse issues including women's representation in art, violence against women and the federal stance on refugees. In both her solo and group works, Just challenges stereotypes of knitting as a domestic craft, recasting it as a potent sculptural and conceptual medium.
