    About the Book

    Edit

This book is a collection of 19th and early 20th century memorial photographs taken of deceased children. This practice was common from the beginning of photography and faded from public view early in the 20th Century as the funeral industry and modern sensitivities discouraged the practice in North America. These early records (part of an extensive personal collection) show the skill, dedication, and sensitivity of photographers who provided remembrance portraits for the solace of bereaved families. Looking beyond the poignancy of these images today, we can still see the beauty captured therein. This catalogue also contains an essay on the history of the practice along with high quality reproductions of many images.
