    About the Book

    Edit

Shortly after the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb on 4 November 1922, the Belgian author and Nobel Prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck visited Egypt in the spring of 1924, via a Mediterranean cruise that also took him to Greece and Lebanon, a ‘second honeymoon’ with his young wife Renée Dahon. In his travelogue Maeterlinck writes only about Egypt, giving the reader almost no details about his journey as such – he was among the first to see some of the young pharao’s treasures - but mainly reflections on daily life, religion and culture, as a would-be Egyptologist. The work appeared first in London in 1925, and later in Paris: 'En Egypte. Notes de voyage', 1928. This is a reprint of the original English edition, on the 100 th anniversary of the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
