    About the Book

    Edit

As an African American growing up in the racially divided city of Newark during the 1960s, John Jenkins could have joined a gang and descend into a life of hopelessness, anger and violence. Instead, he found his calling as a community leader and activist for social justice in the virtually all-white state of Maine. He was elected mayor of Lewiston, served one term in the Maine Legislature and was twice elected mayor of Auburn, the second time as a write-in candidate. Jenkins also was an acclaimed karate teacher and martial arts competitor who was inducted in 2015 into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the International Black Belt Hall of Fame.
