    About the Book

    Edit

Macedonia had recently won its independence from Greece but not without concessions such as changing their flag and a mediation on what the name could be (hence the elaborate Re-public of North Macedonia) and, according to the guide, some manipulation of history's story regarding Alexander the Great. It is a delightful country filled with history, archaeo-logy, art, traditions, religious history and beautiful scenery. The event of the celebration of the Day of St. John the Baptist and Fisher-man's day is celebrated on the 19th of January called Epiphany because during the act of the baptism of Christ God he was finally revealed to humanity as the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is believed that the night before this holiday the dark forces like witches, devils, vampires and ghosts are wandering around, making noise, orgies and committing evil deeds, so that whoever goes outside must take garlic, salt and bread to ward off evil. The centuries-old tradition to throw the cross in the lake from a beautiful boat was interrupted during the Communist times when, as the older people remember, they had to throw the cross into a big pot in the church courtyard. Now, again the cross is thrown into the lake and throngs of people jump in to retrieve it. Those who catch the cross say it is God’s will that leads them to the cross as the waters are extremely muddy and messy due to the great number of swimmers. There are other important traditions to discover.
