    About the Book

    Edit

This DERT book was written and illustrated by Jamie Chen, a Communication Design student from Los Angeles, California. Jamie was a member of the Spring 2019 design team from Parsons School of Design. Jamie’s concept is based on the Brazilian folktale, How the Rabbit Lost His Tail, modernized with a comic style. The story follows and explores the perspectives of characters struggling with societal standards and their insecurities to expand on the original folktale.

    DERTbook
    DERT

DERT works with emerging designers to create unique, customized books. Each DERT book features the design and conceptual artwork created by graphic design students. DERT’s collaborative studio program partners with students at art schools to produce book products that are used for fundraising towards charitable literacy efforts. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book goes to the designer in support of their career advancement. DERT turns everyday people into literacy activists. Proceeds from the sale of this book help fund the donation of our specially designed children’s books to barbershops in at-risk communities nationwide. DERT’s social mission is to ensure that all children identify as readers by having access to books and being read to on a regular basis. Reading together is vital for all children through their preschool years and beyond. DERT publishes a unique line of books and learning tools designed to engage families in reading through all stages of life.
