    About the Book

    Edit

In 2006 Helen Kidd found a tin box in her family's attic in Cassies Croft, outside of Peterculter, Scotland. The tin box was returned to James Duncan who was then 88 years old and living in rural southern Ontario near Fergus. Inside the old tobacco tin was an old journal as well as a collection of photographs, receipts, information sheets and mementos from a journey taken by James Duncan from Scotland to Northern Canada in 1936 to 1938. During these turbulent years as Canada recovered from the depression and the world grew closer to war, James had his great adventure. He traveled by ship, was retained by Immigrations upon arrival, was released, traveled to stay with family in Winnipeg and then on to stay with his Uncle in Beaver Dam, Alberta. He worked in northern Alberta and then made his way through to southern Alberta and on to Vancouver. As he lived he kept this detailed journal. As you read you'll learn about James, a young man coming of age, in Canada.
